    How does it work?

    Enter the number with its country code: international numbers keep their code, short numbers (911, 3949…) are kept as they are, and a 10-digit French number is converted to the international format (+33). The code contains a tel: link, recognized by every phone: when scanned, it shows the number ready to dial.

    The call is never started automatically: the person confirms by pressing the call button. State next to the code what the number is for (“Call us for a quote”), and its cost if it is a premium-rate number.

    A shop window

    The number +1 202 555 0178 becomes “tel:+12025550178”, a code of 25 × 25 modules. Stuck in a shop window and scanned from the sidewalk at 2 m (6.5 ft), it must measure 26.4 cm (10.4 in) per side.

    A “For sale” sign

    On a sign read from the street, at 3 m (10 ft), the same code needs 39.6 cm (15.6 in): an A2 format at least. For a photo taken from further away, enlarge it again: the modules must measure 12 mm.

    Frequently asked questions

    Does the phone call by itself?
    No. The number is shown in the Phone app, and the person starts the call. No QR code can trigger a call without confirmation.
    Should I write the number in international format?
    Yes, with its country code (+1, +44…): it can then be dialed by any phone, including one roaming abroad.
    How do I scan a QR code with a phone?
    Open the camera app and point it at the code: iPhones (iOS 11 and later) and most recent Android phones recognize it directly and show a notification to tap. Otherwise, use the Google Lens app, or our online QR code scanner.
    Will my QR code expire?
    No. The QR codes created here are static: your link, text or credentials are written into the pattern of the code itself. There is no server between the phone and your content, so there is nothing to renew or pay for: the code will work as long as the content (your website, for example) exists.
