    How does it work?

    Enter the WhatsApp number with its country code and, if you like, a greeting message. The code contains an official wa.me link: when scanned, it opens WhatsApp directly on the conversation with that number, message prefilled, without having to save the contact.

    If WhatsApp is not installed, the link opens the WhatsApp web page, which offers to install it or use WhatsApp Web. The message is only sent if the person presses “Send”.

    Booking a table

    A restaurant’s number with “Hello, I would like to book a table for tonight.” gives a 100-byte link and a code of 41 × 41 modules: allow 5.9 cm (2.3 in) on a flyer read from 30 cm (1 ft).

    A tradesperson’s van

    Stuck on a van and scanned from the sidewalk at about 1 m (3 ft), the same code must measure at least 19.6 cm (7.7 in) per side. Shorten the greeting message to get a less dense, and therefore smaller, code.

    Frequently asked questions

    Do I need a WhatsApp Business account?
    No: the wa.me link works with a personal or a business WhatsApp account. The number simply has to be registered on WhatsApp.
    Is my number visible to people who scan?
    Yes, it is part of the link and appears in the conversation. That is the point: letting people message you. For public use, use a business number.
    Why doesn’t the message appear?
    Some old versions of WhatsApp ignore the prefilled message. Update the app; the conversation opens with the right number in any case.
    Will my QR code expire?
    No. The QR codes created here are static: your link, text or credentials are written into the pattern of the code itself. There is no server between the phone and your content, so there is nothing to renew or pay for: the code will work as long as the content (your website, for example) exists.
