    How does it work?

    Enter the network name (SSID) exactly as it appears on phones, choose the encryption and enter the password: the code follows the WIFI: format recognized by the camera on iOS (since iOS 11) and Android (since Android 10), which then offers to join the network in one tap.

    The WPA / WPA2 / WPA3 option suits almost every current router and access point. Keep “WPA3 only” for networks configured without WPA2 compatibility, and tick “Hidden network” if your network is not broadcast. Special characters in the password (; , : " \) are escaped automatically.

    The password never leaves your browser: the code is computed on your device. Bear in mind, though, that anyone who sees the code can connect. For a public place, create a separate guest network.

    The home router

    The network Home-WiFi with a 22-character WPA2 password gives 49 bytes of content and a code of 33 × 33 modules. Scanned from 30 cm (1 ft) on the fridge door, it must measure at least 5 cm (2 in) per side, white margin included.

    A café’s guest Wi-Fi

    For the network Cafe-Guests, displayed on the wall and scanned from the tables at about 1 m (3 ft), the calculator asks for a code of 16.4 cm (6.5 in) per side: an A4 or letter-size poster with the “Connect to the Wi-Fi” frame is perfect.

    Frequently asked questions

    My phone doesn’t offer to connect: why?
    Check the network name, including capitalization, and the encryption type. On Android, open the Wi-Fi settings and then the QR code icon if the camera does not react. On iPhone, the camera shows a “Join network” notification to tap.
    Is the password safe?
    It is not sent anywhere: the code is computed in your browser. But anyone who scans the code can read it, as if it were written on a poster. Use a guest network for the public, and change the password if the code has circulated more than intended.
    What happens if I change my router’s password?
    The code contains the old password: you need to create a new one and reprint it. That is the only case where a static code has to be redone.
    Will my QR code expire?
    No. The QR codes created here are static: your link, text or credentials are written into the pattern of the code itself. There is no server between the phone and your content, so there is nothing to renew or pay for: the code will work as long as the content (your website, for example) exists.
